Extended reading time,
often called Sustained Silent
Reading (SSR) or Drop Everything and Read (DEAR), is a period during the school day
dedicated to independent reading. This dedicated time helps our learners develop a
love of reading. By giving them the freedom to choose books they enjoy reading and
we bring in them a genuine interest in reading. The emphasis on reading, besides
improving the reading skills, improves fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and the
overall literacy skills.
Over a period of time,
it builds the reading
stamina: encourages students to focus and engage with a book for a longer period
of time. They learn to select books, manage their reading time, and engage with
texts independently.
